Must-see places

The Alhambra is the most iconic monument in Granada and one of the most fascinating palace complexes in the Islamic world. This Nasrid palace-city, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, combines architecture, art and nature in a unique way. Its delicate courtyards, fountains and gardens reflect the sophistication of Andalusi culture. The nearby Generalife, the former summer residence of the sultans, stands out for its terraced gardens, water channels and spectacular views over the city and the Sierra Nevada.

The heart of the Alhambra is made up of the Nasrid Palaces, the official residence of the sultans. Here you will find architectural jewels such as the Court of the Lions and the Hall of the Ambassadors, where the decoration of plasterwork, tiles and calligraphy reaches its fullest expression. Each room conveys the elegance and refinement of the Nasrid court, offering an experience that transports the visitor to the splendour of medieval Granada.

Granada’s most romantic walk runs along the banks of the River Darro, with the Alhambra rising above the rooftops of the Albaicín. Medieval arches, Renaissance mansions and stone bridges create a unique setting at the foot of the red hill. It is the natural route towards the Arab quarter declared a World Heritage Site.

Declared a World Heritage Site along with the Alhambra, the Albaicín is the best-preserved medieval Arab quarter in Spain. Its cármenes (traditional walled villa gardens), cobbled lanes and the San Nicolás viewpoint offer the most iconic postcard of Granada: the Alhambra lit up at sunset against the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

The neighbourhood of cave dwellings is the heart of Granada’s Roma flamenco. The zambras of Sacromonte are Intangible World Heritage, and its whitewashed caves on the slope of the Valparaíso hillside hold centuries of history, art and a way of life unique in the world.
