Private Tour · Ávila UNESCO World Heritage
Discover the striking history of Ávila with our private day excursion from Madrid, a unique experience to immerse yourself in one of the best-preserved walled cities in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Its 11th-century medieval walls, its Romanesque and Gothic churches, and the spiritual legacy of Saint Teresa of Ávila make the city an essential destination for anyone seeking history, art and authenticity just 90 minutes from Madrid.
Our official local guides will take you to the city’s most iconic sights: the legendary Walls of Ávila, with their 2.5 km perimeter and 88 towers; the majestic Cathedral of El Salvador, considered the first Gothic cathedral in Spain and fortified as part of the wall itself; the Romanesque Basilica of San Vicente, a 12th-century jewel; and the sites linked to Saint Teresa, such as the Convent of Santa Teresa or the Monastery of the Incarnation.
On our private guided visit to Ávila, you won’t just admire monuments: you’ll experience authentic Castilian traditions. You’ll sample Ávila cuisine at local restaurants (chuletón beef chop, judías del Barco beans, the famous yemas de Santa Teresa (candied egg-yolk sweets)), explore the traditional crafts and stroll through cobbled lanes steeped in history and spirituality. All adapted to your pace, your interests and with the exclusive attention of an expert guide.
We also organise your excursion to Ávila from Segovia, Toledo, Salamanca or other nearby cities, and we can even combine Ávila with Segovia or La Granja in a single day. Book your private tour now and discover why Ávila captivates all who cross its walls.
Must-see places

The city’s ultimate symbol and the best-preserved medieval wall in Europe. With a 2.5 km perimeter, 88 towers and 9 gates, they were built from the 11th century onwards over former Roman and Visigothic walls. Walking along their parapet walk offers unique views over the city and the mountains.

Considered the first Gothic cathedral in Spain (12th-14th centuries), it is built into the wall itself, forming one of its defensive towers. Highlights include its ambulatory, the main altarpiece by Pedro Berruguete and Juan de Borgoña, and the tomb of “El Tostado” by Vasco de la Zarza.

A masterpiece of 12th-century Spanish Romanesque, built on the site of the martyrdom of the siblings Vincent, Sabina and Christeta. Its western portico, its polychrome cenotaph and the crypt of La Soterraña make it one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Castile.

Built in the 17th century over the birthplace of Saint Teresa of Ávila, mystic and writer of the Spanish Golden Age. It lets you discover Teresian spirituality, visit the chapel on the site of her birth and understand why Ávila is one of Spain’s leading destinations for religious tourism.
Full day · approx. 9 hours
We begin the day with a comfortable pick-up at your Madrid hotel at whatever time suits you best. During the roughly 90-minute journey, your guide will introduce you to the history of Castile, the origins of walled cities and the events that shaped Ávila over the centuries.
We start the visit at the Cuatro Postes viewpoint, the perfect spot to take in the walled silhouette of Ávila in all its splendour. Next, we go up onto the imposing medieval walls to discover the story of their construction, their defensive role and their 88 perfectly preserved towers.
Explore the majestic Cathedral of Ávila, the first Gothic cathedral in Spain, fortified and built into the wall. We’ll walk through its chapels, altarpieces, tombs and the choir, and stroll through the most iconic squares of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Enjoy a traditional lunch at one of the best local restaurants, where you can sample the famous chuletón de Ávila (a beef chop from the Avileña-Negra Ibérica breed), the judías del Barco de Ávila beans and, for a sweet finish, the famous yemas de Santa Teresa. We’ll recommend the places with the best value for money.
We devote the afternoon to the Basilica of San Vicente, a jewel of Castilian Romanesque, and to a tour of the Teresian sites: the Convent of Santa Teresa, the Monastery of the Incarnation or Las Madres, depending on your interests. You’ll also have free time to lose yourself in the cobbled lanes and discover local craft shops.
After an unforgettable day, we’ll set off on the journey back to Madrid, dropping you off comfortably at your hotel. The itinerary is completely flexible and adapts to your preferences: we can adjust it, add stops or combine Ávila with Segovia or La Granja on a longer excursion.

The full excursion lasts between 8 and 9 hours, with a flexible pick-up at your Madrid hotel in the morning and a return in the late afternoon. The drive is about 90 minutes each way, which leaves around 5-6 hours to enjoy Ávila at a relaxed pace.
The itinerary includes the Walls of Ávila, the Cathedral of El Salvador, the Basilica of San Vicente, the historic centre declared a World Heritage Site and the main sites linked to Saint Teresa of Ávila (the Convent of Santa Teresa, the Monastery of the Incarnation). The route is fully customisable to your interests.
Our private tours to Ávila are offered in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. If you need another language, ask us and we’ll do our best to assign you a qualified official guide.
It includes: private return transport from Madrid (or an agreed city of origin), an official local guide throughout the day, pick-up at your hotel, personalised attention and culinary and cultural recommendations tailored to your group.
Admission to monuments (the Cathedral, Basilica, Walls — approximately €5-9 per person for each), lunch at a local restaurant and tips are not included. If you wish, we can arrange to buy tickets in advance to avoid queues.
Of course. As it is a 100% private tour, we adapt the itinerary to your preferences: we can combine Ávila with Segovia, El Escorial or La Granja on a longer excursion, spend more time on Teresian spirituality, follow a food route or focus on Romanesque and Gothic art.
We recommend comfortable footwear (the historic centre is cobbled and has slopes), warm clothing in winter (Ávila sits at 1,131 m altitude and tends to be cold), water, sunglasses and a camera. In summer, a hat and sun protection are advisable.
